Silver & Component Standards

This page explains what sterling silver 925 means, how a silver mark differs from composition testing, and why each jewelry component may need its own material disclosure.

What Sterling Silver 925 Means

Sterling silver 925 is a silver alloy containing at least 92.5% silver by mass. The remaining portion is made up of other metals used to give the alloy practical strength and workability. The number 925 refers to a fineness of 925 parts silver per 1,000.

A 925 statement should apply only to the product or component covered by the available material record or evidence. It does not, by itself, describe every finding or accessory attached to a piece.

S925 Mark vs. Independent Composition Testing

Evidence type What it can show What it does not establish by itself
S925 mark or stamp A visible mark represented as S925 or 925 is present on the inspected item or component. The mark alone is not a quantitative measurement of silver content and does not establish the composition of unmarked components.
Independent composition testing The tested sample or component produced the composition result stated in the report. The result does not automatically cover other components, SKUs, batches, or visually similar products.
Supplier or internal material record The material is recorded for the product or component within the stated business scope. It is not presented as independent testing unless an applicable independent report also exists.

Main Body and Other Components

One piece of jewelry can contain several metal parts. The main body or setting may have one material specification while the chain, clasp, ear posts, hooks, connectors, or other findings have different specifications.

Component What to check
Main body or setting The metal that forms the primary structure or holds the stone.
Chain The chain material and any plating or finish stated for that chain.
Clasp The clasp material, which may differ from the chain or main body.
Ear posts The post material that passes through the ear.
Hooks The hook or ear-wire material, including any separate finish.
Connectors Jump rings, bails, pins, or other links between parts.
Other findings Backs, caps, spacer beads, crimps, soldered parts, and other functional components.

TaShi’s Metal Disclosure Principles

  • Metal information is recorded and disclosed at the most specific product and component level available.
  • An S925 mark is described as a mark; it is not converted into an independent composition claim.
  • A main-body specification is not automatically extended to a chain, clasp, ear post, hook, connector, or other finding.
  • When a component is not identified, TaShi does not fill the gap with a broader “all sterling silver” statement.
  • Internal or supplier records are not described as independent testing.

How Testing Scope Is Applied

Composition evidence applies only to the sample or component tested and to any documented scope that connects that result to a product, SKU, material, or batch. A result for one sample cannot automatically be extended to other jewelry or to every metal part in the same piece.

When TaShi cites testing in a product disclosure, the wording should identify the covered material or component and avoid suggesting that every product or finding has been independently tested.

How to Check a Specific Product

Read the product page’s materials and specifications for the main metal and any separately identified components. If a chain, clasp, ear post, hook, connector, or other finding is not listed, do not assume it has the same composition as the main body. Contact TaShi before purchase if you need component-specific information that is not shown.
